Feeling really depressed

I am having a difficult time knowing what the future holds for my son. I feel that ever since his diagnosis, and subsequently educating myself on his condition I felt I had some understanding. Seeing the film The Boy Inside really brought things home. I have trouble speeking about my son without getting emotional.I am a business owner, coach hockey on weekends and concider myself a pretty happy, thick skinned guy. This is all I can think about now, I think about my son every minute of every day and the hurdles that he will face. I look at my sons twin brother, who has no sign of AS and cant help feeling really depressed. How am I going to get through this, I feel that the sparkle in my eye is gone.I will work hard to do everything in my power to help him but I am carrying this tremendous weight. Any advice,or communication would be appreciated. I feel that I have no one to talk to, who understands. How much is too much? Electronics/Punishment

My son has Asperger's and he is 12 years old. He has never had an interest other than acting and he is not very physical. He does not play with toys and his only interest seems to be reading watching t.v. playing game cube or listening to music on the computer. He is very musical but will only play for a short period of time. We have tried to broaden his interest over the years with music lessons, tae kwon do, biking, hiking, soccer, swimming but we have never had any luck. He will not even play outside with his sister. He is very frustrated and says that he needs to relax. We make sure that he has some form of exercise mostly evey day but most time he wants to watch t.v. My husband and I argue about how much is too much and we could use some advice. Our marriage is very shaky due to the fact that we both disagree on his upbringing. One of us believes that punishing and removing his electronic previleges is the way to change his behavior as he can be very verbal. Is it possible to change our son or are we forever going to battle his sendentary life style? What types of consequences do you give your child for acting innapropriately? Is msn helpful to your child or has it become a problem? signed Conflicted

I have a 7 years old boy with AS

I too have watched the broadcast 'The boy inside'. My husband couldn't sleep so he got up to watch TV at 2:00 am. He came and woke me up stating that he thought I would be interested in watching a special on AS. He now realizes that everything I have been telling him about our son is reality and that the road ahead is not an easy one. Since watching the special, I have been hit with the realization of what I can expect in the future. I live in small place where the school my son goes to has never dealt with AS and there is no funding to have special help for him. So along with educating myself on what can be done to help him, I need to educate them too. I've never been so happy to have been wakened from my sleep. I could really see myself in the everyday struggle that Adam's family goes through. Rosanne

Thank you for opening this real story to all who do not believe what life is like for our son and our family. It is the best portrayal I have seen EVER! WOW!

What Can I Do?

I am an ABA therapist and this movie moved me SO much. I have not been able to stop thinking about it. What can I do to help? I work with 2 boys who have AS, age 3 and 5. I also mentor a 13 year old typical girl. I am out there and what to know what I can do to raise awareness and help kids understand AS more. --Jenefer Hi Jenefer, Marianne, the filmmaker here. Thanks for your offer to get involved. Where do you live?

Camp counsellor

HI, i'm a support counsellor for a summer camp and I absolutely love my job. I just wanted to let some parents know that there's a foundation called Reach for the Rainbow which specializes in intergration within summer camps. We have children come to camp with different needs each summer. We help with social skills as well as teach them new things in an environment that isn't as stressful as school.

What age to tell??

I am the parent of a 7 year old girl with Asperger's. She is becoming aware that she is a little different than her class mates. We are struggling with when to/how to tell her about having Asperger's. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Bob Moore.
